Goal Scorers: Ted Markos (2), Dan Bednarek (2) and Joe Koehler (1). Goalie: Alex Martinez
The White Eagles came out as the more aggressive team in the first period, by controlling the puck and attacking the net. They jumped to an early 3-1 lead, as the ‘Dogs’ looked like a team struggling to keep pace.
Midway through the second period, the Bulldogs broke through by scoring three unanswered goals (2 by Bednarek and 1 by Markos) to take a 4-3 lead. The momentum had definitely swung in their favor.
Both teams traded goals midway through the third period. With about 4 minutes left in the game, the White Eagles tied the game at five and took the lead less than two minutes later.
Though they trailed 6-5, the ‘Dogs’ let a great a great opportunity to tie the game in the last two minutes slip by. They first had a 5-on-4 power play advantage, then a 5-on-3 and finally a 6-on-3 after pulling the goalie. Unfortunately, they failed to score, giving the White Eagles the win.
Commenting on the future of the team and this season, Bulldog GM and goalie, Alex Martinez said “We’ve had a good team for the last couple seasons. However some of the guys got lazy and when the going got tough, the guys we used to count on just couldn’t pull the trigger. Furthermore, we got younger, smaller and faster. While that allowed us to move the puck along and score at will, we lost the ‘Bulldog attitude’, synonymous with the ‘knock-em-and-sock-em’ teams of the past. Personnel changes were made to get the right mix of people in; Fast guys, smart guys and tough guys. I think this will put some pressure on our offensive stars to lead this team. It should be a fun season.”
The Good:
Passing- The ‘Bulldogs’ stuck to the formula that has made them successful for years by executing the breakout pass well and moving the puck nicely in the offensive zone.
Defense- Despite being a man down, the three man rotation of Bednarek, LaBuda and Markos showed great poise by challenging the White Eagles on every attack. They also accounted for the majority of the offense.
The Bad:
Defense on the Point: The ‘Bulldog’ wingers left the points open too frequently.
Power Play Opportunities: Despite having the power play advantage on seven occasions (and 5-on-3 opportunities twice), the ‘Dogs’ only capitalized once.
The Ugly:
Bogdan (Polish Maher-wannabe) Jamirewski: Like Arnold Schwarzenegger said to the Predator “You ahh one, ugly, motherfu…..”
Player(s) of the Game:
Dan Bednarek and Ted Markos; 2 goals apiece.
