Rest in Peace My Precious

Park Ridge, IL- Gathered outside the Oakton Ice Area in Park Ridge, IL this past Wednesday night, the Chicago Bulldogs had no idea that Defensemen Ted Markos had fate of that’s night game and perhaps the entire season stored in his hockey bag. Ted’s walk from the parking lot to the locker room would be the longest walk of his hockey career.

Growing up in Greece as a boy Ted Markos did not live very far from the Peace and Freedom Stadium, home of Greek Hockey that started back in 1984. Ted would sometimes not go to school or come home late just so he can sneak away and take a glimpse at the players representing his homeland.

On one lucky afternoon skipping Moussaka cooking class, Ted’s life would change forever, Greek Hockey legend and All Time Goal Scorer Dimitris Kalyvas was hurt during practice and as a precaution the team’s doctor called in an ambulance and rush Dimitris to the hospital. Shocked that his hero was hurt, Ted immediately rushed to Dimitris side and said “
Είστε καλά” (which means are you ok). Smiling at little Ted, Dimitris smiled, said nothing and tossed Ted his pair of Elbow Pads.

To this day, Ted Markos credits his succeful hockey career to Dimitris and his elbow pads, but as much as he adores and treasures those lucky pads, Ted had no choice, but to retire them from play and get new ones.

Prior to the Bulldogs stepping on the ice, there was a moment of silence for the lucky elbow pads, yes there were a few tears here and there, mainly from Ted, but none the less Ted donned a new fresh pair and took the ice against the Ice Pack.

End result? Ted scored 3 goals and led the Bulldogs to their first win of 2012 by a score of 6-2.

“The Elbow pads had no more goals left in them” commented Ted Markos after the game. “I’ll be alright, sniff, sniff”.

Other goals scored that contributed to the win were 2 goals from winger James Senne and 1 power play goal from Jason Darlfer.

With the win the Bulldogs are removed from last place and hope that it’s the beginning of a winning streak.
