It's Official, Bulldogs are in the Playoffs

 GAME RECAP

BULLDOGS Panthers Date/Time Rink
4 3 04/26/2005 John Rink

April 27th, 2005- In a word, it was ugly. The Panthers took their subliminal play and gave the Bulldogs all they could handle Tuesday night at The Edge Ice Arena.  I use the word subliminal because the Panthers are a rather deceiving team.  At first glance, a majority of the players seem as though they can barely skate...in fact at second and third glance, they still seem that way.  But they somehow get the job done.  They connect on their passes, move the puck up ice, get back on defense, and mark their opponents in the slot and at the points.  It's not pretty but it's effective; rather reminiscent of our scrappier, primitive days of not so long ago.

The first period was quick paced, end to end action which both teams scoring one goal a piece. Jason Darfler would do the honors.

In the 2nd, the Panthers put the screws to the Bulldogs with a couple of their grease monkey, hacksaw wielding, motor heads, as they managed to get under the skin of some of the Bulldog's.  Discipline fell to the wayside as the Bulldogs forgot all they learned in their anger management classes and continuously retaliated against their antagonizers.  With so many penalties, the Bulldogs found it hard to get some flow to their game.  Lines were mixed, changes were confused, and nothing seemed to gel. The second would end ugly with both teams still tied now 2-2.

With the game tied, it still didn't seem safe and with more than enough time left, Bulldogs Jason Darfler scored to cut it to a 1 goal lead. More importantly though, it seemed to spark a blow torch within the team. With a couple of minutes left, the Panthers would score once again on a rebound shot that would tie the game and send the game to overtime.

Overtime was all fast paced with both goalies making key saves. No one would score and the game was now in the hands of five shooters for each team in a shoot-out.

This would be the Bulldogs first ever overtime and shoot-out in their short ice Hockey History and they would come through with flying colors. Martinez would stop 4-5 shots while Kurt Swanson would score and Frank Lionello would score the game winner.

The win would lock up second place and Officially mark the regular season at 8-6 with the Bulldogs having their first ever winning season.

The Good:

  • -Passing: Mainly on the breakout pass, the ‘Dogs’ executed it well.

  • Very little complaints if any from Panther’ coach Rich Runoio.

The Bad:

  • -Penalties: Not much you can do here. Both teams played extremely physical and aggressive so penalties were to be expected.

  • The Bulldogs took a serious blow when Mike Mancuso, their third leading scorer went crashing awkwardly into the end boards last week. Hopefully, it's just a sore knee and he will be back to play next season.  The Bulldogs  will sorely miss his consistent and steady presence on the ice.

 The Ugly:

  • -Sam Karim failed his Anger Management test.

  • The Edge Staff for once again failing to fax over a score sheet. If there are errors then please call them to complain and read our site disclaimer.

Player(s) of the Game:

  • Frank Lionello- like a story book ending when an All Star picks a fan from the stands to win the game, well that is how Frank felt when Jason called his name out to be the 5th shooter to win the game in a tensed shoot-out.

Next for the Bulldogs is on Friday April 29th at 7:50pm against the TBD
