Strong Defensive Effort Wasted in Loss

February 14th, 2005-Despite adding several more practice sessions this season , the ‘Bulldogs’ have not been able to register a victory since their opening game. They dropped another heartbreaker, 2-0 to the ‘.45’s’.

This was another defensive battle, as has been the case with most of their matches with the ‘.45’s’ in past seasons. Both goalies made some incredible stops and both defenses rarely made any mistakes. On the other hand, the offense had their opportunities, but failed to get the puck in net

The ‘.45’s’ took the lead, early in the first period on an easy goal that should never have gone in. The score remained 1-0 for most of the game, until the ’.45’s’ scored again with nine seconds left in the contest. The goal was a result of a botched plan to pull the goalie and add a sixth skater. The ‘Bulldogs’ just couldn’t seem to push the puck forward to open up an opportunity.

“We should have won that game! The ‘45's’ won their first game of the season and that may have put us in last” said Alex Martinez. “The race is still close. The next three games are very winnable; some of these guys need to step it up. We cannot depend on Jason [Darfler] and Joe [Van Grimbergen] to score all the time. I know that Bill [Nolan] has really made a difference along with John [Reeg], but the others need to move your asses hustle out there.”

The loss puts the ‘Bulldog’ record at 1-3 and drops them into a three way tie for last place.

The Good:

  • -Power Kills: The ‘Dogs’ were 3-for-3 on penalty kills.

  • -Defense: As usual, they were solid again.

  • -Goaltending: Martinez made some spectacular stops.

The Bad:

  • -Offense: Or lack thereof!

  • -Stamina: The ‘Dogs’ looked as though they may have run out of gas, by the final period. Perhaps some wind sprints in practice will build up their endurance.

The Ugly:

  • -Alex Martinez’ blind date. Here’s a bit of advice Alex……KEEP IT AT THE ZOO!

Player(s) of the Game:

Alex Martinez. Martinez kept the ‘Dogs’ in the game by making stop after stop. Unfortunately, the ‘.45’s’ goalie was just as stellar.
