Bulldogs’ Embarrassed by Lowly ‘Centurions

 GAME RECAP

BULLDOGS Centurions Date/Time Rink
2 3 08/05/2006 @ 4:30pm Johnny's Ice House

August 8th, 2006- One week after ensuring themselves a guaranteed fourth seed in the playoffs with a loss, the once streaking ‘Bulldogs’ lost another game. This time they lost to the winless ‘Centurions’, who outplayed, out-hustled and out-classed our beloved ‘Dogs’. The final score was 3-2. It was the most humiliating defeat in ‘Bulldogs’ history.

“I guess everything evens out in the end” said Maher Karim. “We put the only blemish [One shutout victory & one tie on the record of ‘ROH”, who steamrolled over the entire league. In the balance of life, we were probably destined to lose to the only team without a victory.”

The ‘Dogs’ couldn’t get anything going on for 2 ½ periods. They were being shutdown by a team that looked like an all star squad and a goalie, who looked like Patrick Roy. This couldn’t possibly have been the team that came in at 0-18 and had given the most goals in the league.

Trailing 3-0, with less than five minutes to go, the ‘Dogs’ finally scored. Or so they thought. Sam Karim’s shot went in and out of the net, but was declared a no goal by the referee. Despite the players protest, the officials ruling held up. Mike Montague did score moments later putting the ‘Dogs’ within reach.

With just under two minutes left in the game, the ‘Dogs’ pulled their goalie, Alex Martinez, to give themselves the extra man advantage. It worked as Montague scored again as his shot snuck past the goalie at the 1:12 mark.

After winning the face-off, they again pulled Martinez for the extra skater. Unfortunately, they came up empty this time around. The ‘Centurions’ celebrated the first win in their franchise history like they had just won the Stanley Cup.

“I am not going to rant about the loss. All we can do is try and win our playoff game. If we win we move on and if we lose well then we are done” said Martinez. “I was afraid that with fourth place already clinched, that there would be a letdown by some players for this game. My worst fears came true. Some players didn’t show up and several showed up physically, but didn’t put forth the effort. In the end, it didn’t mean a thing to us since a win or loss would not have effected our playoff status.”

The ‘Bulldogs’ 21 points (10-8-1) limp into the playoffs with two straight losses. This team looked unstoppable just a week ago as they reeled off five consecutive victories. That’s the team that needs to show up in two weeks when the playoffs begin

The Good:

  • Goaltending: The only aspect of the game that the ‘Dogs’ didn’t underachieve.

The Bad:

  • Player shortage: The ‘Bulldogs’ had their worst turnout this season as only eight skaters and one defenseman showed. .

 The Ugly:

  • The Darfler/Senne Welcome Home Party: More details to come.
