 GAME RECAP

BULLDOGS Black Bears Date/Time Rink
3 9 07/07/2004 The Edge Ice arena

July 7th, 2004- One week after suiting up only five skaters and getting their asses lit up like a barbeque in hell, the Bulldogs jumped back into the mix of the tight playoff race. Unfortunately, they lost their tenth game in ten tries to the talented but timid ‘Black Bears’ 9-3.

The ‘Dogs’ all but eliminated themselves from championship play, and must somehow win their last four games to salvage their season. Still missing in action for the ‘Dogs’ were Dan Ayotte, Gil Saunders, Mike Mysliwec, Kurt Swanson and Ted Markos who served the second of a three game suspension for intent to injure (or kill, judging by the official’s reaction) with a lethal puck

The ‘Dogs’ were in good spirits before the game. "Hey, when you have 10 skaters suit up after only five guys in the previous game, you gotta feel like we are gonna win this game" said Ryne Gerstner before the contest.

The ‘Dogs’ didn’t take long before showing off their enthusiasm. Trailing 1-0, Gerstner broke forward with a 2 on 1 breakaway, midway through the 1st period to tie the game at one apiece on a goal that deflected off the shin of Sal Karim. Solid defense kept the game close for the remainder of the first frame, but the ‘Bears’ scored two quick goals with under two minutes to take the lead.

Less than five minutes into the second period, the ‘Crack Bears’ again scored twice to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The quick turnaround was nothing new to this squad. They have seen their opponents do this to them all season long. "I don’t know what it is." said Alex Martinez. "There is something about that second period that always seems to do us in and turns me into Swiss cheese." The second period ended mercifully with the ‘Dogs’ looking up at a 6-1 deficit.

It would take quite a while for the Bulldogs to score again. The "new and improved Joey V." scored on a screaming wrister, assisted by Gerstner. They would score again midway through the third on a goal by Sam Karim who was assisted again by Gerstner and Mike Mancuso to narrow the gap, 6-3.

The second half of period number three saw both teams getting quite nasty with one another. The ‘Crack Bears’ dug into their bag of dirty tricks and began unleashing them onto the ‘Dogs’. However, these Bulldogs are no strangers to dirty tricks themselves, and would never let another team intimidate them. After all, this is the same team who back in their days as an inline squad:

  • -served 12 penalties in a single game, and still won.

  • -played and won a game with only 5 players, despite having 4 players suspended.

  • -intimidated an opponent into running home with their tails between their legs, despite the fact that they were the instigators waiting to pick a fight in the parking lot!

  • -scared an entire crew of referees from ever officiating another one of their games.

"We weren’t going to back down from these bums!" said Maher Karim.. "A hard hit here, a body slam there and few deadly punches in between wasn’t anything out of the ordinary for us." How right he was as the Bulldogs fought back and the hits kept on coming. Unfortunately so did the penalties and eventually the goals. The ‘Bears’ scored three more goals to extend their lead to 9-3, yet they still complained and whined loudly, in hypocritical fashion to the officials about cheap shots, even though they delivered a few of their own.

After the final horn blew, to signal the end of the game, teammates and officials restrained players from both sides, as some minor scuffles ensued. Several other ‘Bears’ player escaped to their locker room, to avoid being targeted by their "favorite" Bulldog.

The Good:

  • -The Bulldogs actually had more than five players show up.

The Bad:

  • -Passing. Or lack thereof. Too many soft or blind passes converted into turnovers. The ‘Dogs’ rarely take advantage of 2-on-1 or 3-on-1 breakaways by distributing the puck effectively.
  • -Positioning. Big problem all season. The bulldogs need to play their respective positions better (covering the point, keeping their opponents out of the crease, etc.). Puck chasing is leaving their opponents open for many quick one-timers and easy shots.

The Ugly:

  • -The Bulldogs on the powerplay.
  • -#24 Tim Krenl, #9 Rich Metz and # 13 R. Dierking of the ’Black Bears’ are about the ugliest son-of-a-bitches ever seen on a hockey rink.
