Jesters Get the Last Laugh

 GAME RECAP

BULLDOGS Jesters Date/Time Rink
4 14 05/12/2004 The Edge Ice arena

May 12th 2004-BENSENVILLE, IL-Still reeling from the beating they took last week in their ice hockey debut, the Bulldogs had higher hopes entering Tuesday's game against the Jesters. Although they were short a couple skaters, they still played hard, but wound up on the wrong end, losing 14-4.

The game started off with the Jesters controlling the puck for much of the first period in the Bulldogs' zone. "We played out of position for the most part and our wingers didn't cover the point." said defenseman "Big Mike". The Jesters jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but were unable to capitalize on putting the game away early failing on several powerplay chances, including a 5-on-3 advantage.

The second period began with the 'Dogs' shorthanded. They were able kill the penalty, only to be slapped with another penalty moments later. Playing aggressively, however they found an opening, by scoring a short-handed goal on their beleaguered opponents. The goal was a hard one-timer by Sam Karim who was assisted by right winger, Anthony Micheles, putting the 'Dogs' on the board. The goal seemed to shift the momentum in their favor as an exuberant Bulldogs bench, looked to seize the opportunity to get back in the game.

Less than two minutes after the unlikely shorty, center, Dan Ayotte, making his Bulldogs debut, smacked a "howitzer" passed the goalie, to cut the Jester lead to 3-2. Ayotte's goal was assisted by Sean O'Connell. Unfortunately, the chance to tie or take the lead was short-lived as the Jesters went on to score four goals in the next four minutes, sending the once resurgent 'Dogs' down by five goals. The last five minutes of the 2nd period became more physical as both teams began tussling and scrapping around the net. The referees, let the two teams play it out without incident. With just over a minute left, O'Connell stole the puck from the defensive zone and skated up the ice on a 3-on-2 breakaway. O'Connell fed a perfectly timed pass from behind the net, to Left Winger Maher Karim, who snapped it in over the goalies left shoulder. The period ended with the Jesters leading 7-3.

Less than two minutes into the third period the Jesters score on a 3-on-1 breakaway to extend their lead. The Bulldogs, bounced right back by scoring exactly 10 seconds later. This time O'Connell put the moves on the goalie, and scored easily. He was assisted by defenseman Joe Van Gimbergen, to get them within four goals. That however proved to be the Bulldogs final tally as they just ran out of gas for the remainder of the game. "When you're short a couple skaters, its going to catch up with you", said Sam Karim as he observed many of his teammates taking shorter shifts and breathing heavily. The well rested Jesters capitalized on the opportunity and closed out the game with six more goals to clinch the victory.

"We just need a few more games together and then we'll be fine", said team captain & goalie Alex Martinez. "Most of the guys have not played ice hockey in a long time, with a few guys having never played. Because so many guys have never played with one another before, it's going to take a period for us to adjust and gel together. By seasons end, we'll look like an all star team."

The Good: Not much here, but the Bulldogs killed all of their penalties, bringing their season power kill percentage to .833 (1 for 6). They shot almost 30% (4 goals on 14 SOG). Putting the puck on net more often should see their offense increase with each passing game.

The Bad: The 0-2 Bulldogs gave up an astounding 46 shots on goal and saw the puck in their defensive zone for about 70% of the game. Although no record of turnovers are kept, they gave the puck up plenty, mostly in their defensive zone. If they want to minimize those numbers, they need to play their positions more alertly and the offensive players need to do a better job of fore-checking.

The Ugly: The Bulldogs have been grossly outscored (33-5), and out shot (96-26) in two games, but they do have the "advantage" in Penalty Minutes (12-4). In that same span, there has been far too many offside calls against them as well, so they better learn what the hell a blue line represents, real quick.
