September 19th, 2005- After two sluggish games (one a loss the other a tie), the ‘Bulldogs’ faced an old nemesis on Sunday night, the ‘Drunk Penguins’. They had defeated the ‘Penguins’ all three times last season including the last two meetings by a combined score of 28-1. This particular game wasn’t much different, as the ‘Dogs’ won easily 9-0.

The ‘Dogs’ took the lead midway through the first period as Ryne Gerstner deked and shucked his way through three defenders, scoring top shelf. Jason Darfler added another goal approximately two minutes later giving the ‘Bulldogs’ control of the game, despite some extra physical play by the ‘Penguins’. Normally a weak defensive squad, the ‘Penguins’ sprayed their fair share of hits and kept the crease clear at all costs. Their new defensive style limited the ‘Bulldogs’ to only eight shots on goal for the period.

Gerstner started off the second period scoring by tallying his second goal of the night, this one on a nifty feed from Jeremy Campbell in front of the net. They would go on to score twice more in the period on goals by Darfler (assisted by Mike Mancuso) and Joey F.V. to deflate any chance that the ‘Penguins’ thought they may have had to get back into the game. “After we took the 5-0 lead, it appeared as if they just gave up” said Sal Karim. “They showed little, if any of the fight they had earlier in the game.”

The ‘Bulldogs’ on the other hand, didn’t let up in the third period. They went on and scored four more goals, one each from Gerstner, Darfler, Mancuso and newcomer Darren ‘Screech’ Diamond. Diamond, who was claimed off of waivers made a big impact in his debut, despite being a bit rusty. “My legs were hurting, but I should be fine after a couple of practices” said Diamond. “This is a great bunch of guys, and I’m privileged to play with them.”

“It was a good game” said Alex Martinez. “It really feels great to finally get a win.  Getting the shutout was an effort from everyone. Everybody had a good game and I believe it was the end result of our tough practices.”

As it stands, the ‘Bulldogs’ currently sit alone in second place with 3 points (a 1-1-1 record). They will be facing some stiff competition in the coming weeks so they can’t rest their laurels on this victory. It’s a long season ahead and if they want to repeat as champions, they can’t afford too many more losses.

The Good:

  • Defense: Rebounding from an inconsistent game last week, the defense looked sharp in setting up the breakout pass, and setting the tone for the offense The ‘D’ was especially stingy in the defensive zone against the ‘Penguin’ attackers.

  • Penalty Kills: As usual, being short-handed didn’t stop the ‘Dogs’ from stuffing their opponents and killing all penalties. They are now 14-15 on the kill for the season.

  • Goaltending: Alex Martinez sent a message to the rest of the league by registering his first shutout of the season.

  • Hustle: The game was decided primarily by which team out-hustled the other. Throughout much of the game, the ‘Dogs’ scooped up loose pucks, stole passes, found the breakout pass and disrupted their opponents flow by fore-checking, or getting a body on a ‘Penguin’ skater.

The Bad:

  • None!

 The Ugly:

  • Marty Tong: Commenting on how hot Alex Martinez looked this particular night, this guy needs to spend more time focusing on the game, rather than trying to get phone numbers from certain olive skinned players.

  • Andy ‘Oz’ Osvath: The ‘Penguin’ goalie for several reasons:

1.)     His rotten all around play.

2.)     Early in the game, he skated out of his crease in an effort to beat Maher ‘Speedy’ Karim to a loose puck. The two of them collided with one another as ‘Oz’ attempted to take his legs out from underneath him. In the end, he got the worst part of the exchange as he lay on the ice, moaning in pain for ten minutes.

3.)     Late in the game, he skated way out of the crease, only to end up sitting on a puck in the corner, preventing Ryne Gerstner from digging it out. At long last, the official saved him by blowing the whistle, although a delay of game penalty should have been called.

4.)     Taking hacks with his stick at any player within striking distance of the crease.

    5.)     Poor sportsmanship.

Player of the Game:

Ryne Gerstner & Jason Darfler : Ryne Gerstner & Jason Darfler. Both players nailed the hat-trick with Ryne also grabbing two assists.
