Jets Crash and Burn Against Bulldogs

 GAME RECAP

BULLDOGS Sky West Eagles Date/Time Rink
8 2 02/12/2006 The Edge Ice Arena

February 13th, 2006- The undefeated ‘Bulldogs’ faced the 0-3-1 SkyWest ‘Jets’ on Sunday night, for the first time this season. Despite having 17 eligible players on their roster, the ‘Jets’ dressed 14 players, including two former ‘Bulldogs’; Dan ‘The Gas Man’ Ayotte & Tony Micheles. It wasn’t much of a challenge as the ‘Dogs’ made quick and easy work of the inexperienced club, beating them 8-2.

It didn’t take long for the ‘Bulldogs’ to attack. Joey F.V. scored the games first two goals five minutes into the contest to give his club the early lead. The ‘Jets’ on the other hand managed only two shots on goal in the entire first period, without registering a single score. They couldn’t seem to manage any sort of consistency.

“While they do have talent and several studs on their roster, they just didn’t appear to be in sync” said Alex Martinez. I’m sure after they get a few games under their belt, this will be one of the better teams in the league.”

The second period was again dominated by the ‘Dogs’. They posted three more goals, including one of the ugliest ever posted in ‘Bulldog’ history. Frank Lionello teed up for a hard slapper from the high slot, only to chunk it, lose his balance and fall. The puck slid, rolled and somehow popped past the ‘Jet’ goalie to give his squad a 3-0 lead.  Frank’s recollection gave chuckles to his teammates as his only memory of the play was “That was a great play. I hit it hard and it flew past the goalie, top shelf at high speed!”

Additional goals in the period were scored by an unlikely duo as defensemen Tony Feeney and Aaron Sejud both registered their first goals of the season.

Although the ‘Bulldogs’ gave up two goals in the third period, the ‘Jets’ never threatened to get close. The ‘Dogs’ added three more goals of their own by Sejud, Darren Diamond and Jason Darfler. The goals by Sejud and Darfler came on the power play, while Diamond’s goal was scored short-handed.

At 4-0-1, the ‘Bulldogs’ sit atop the standings in a first place tie with the ‘Bandits’. On Thursday night only one of those teams will be the last undefeated club in the BHL as they face each other.

The Good:

  • Goaltending: For the first two and periods, Alex was unstoppable.
  • Penalty Kills: The ‘Dogs’ killed all four of their penalties. They have only given up one power play goal all season.
  • Shots-on-Goal: Rebounding from the low total posted in their last game, the ‘Dogs’ out-shot the ‘Jets’ by a 3:1 ratio.

The Bad:

  • None

 The Ugly:

  • The ‘Fuddy-Duddy League’ opened up the evening with their “Idiots on Ice” comedy routine. It was quite amusing.

Player of the Game:

Joey V. and the ‘Bulldog’ Defensemen

While Joey shined in the limelight by posting two goals and two assists, it was the four defensemen who dominated the game. They held off the ‘Jets’ tallying for four goals and three assists accounting for seven of the ‘Bulldogs’ thirteen total points.
