 GAME RECAP

BULLDOGS RHINOS Date/Time Rink
6 9 12/10/2007 Center Ice of DuPage

December 12th, 2007- Yup, I don’t like these Tier 1 league games stated an undisclosed Bulldog.  Just eight games into the season and the Chicago Bulldogs continue on their losing ways (4 in a row in to be exact).  The Bulldogs seem to have lost track of how they use to win games in the past.  Starting off slow, poor defensive play, no back checking -- all of these things combined contributed to this past Monday  night's 9-6 loss to the Rhinos.

Now don't get me wrong, that’s only half of what caused the Bulldogs to lose on that night, the other half definitely belongs to those guys in the striped shirts on the ice. Here comes the fun part...

Where or where to begin with these refs.  Let's start with the many missed calls, many hooks or hits to slow down our fast players. Then there were the occasions where one ref calls something only to get overridden by the other ref. Now the most important call you can make in hockey has to be calling a goal. These two manage to mess that up as well as the Bulldogs scored right from the get go only to again have it called a “no goal”.

With the Bulldogs celebrating together in front of the net and the Rhinos players blaming each other for not covering their man and the Rhinos goalie pausing to get a drink of water to refresh himself for being out of position, things were looking good for the Bulldogs.

Now, what the guys in stripes were watching or doing while all this was going on is beyond me but one of them said something like "I did not see it go in”. What? Everyone, and I mean everyone, on the ice knew it was a goal.  Our team. Their team. The timekeeper. The people watching upstairs. Their mothers. Their mother's mothers.  Everyone.  Well, everyone except for the two referees.

Now I'm sure you've seen coaches in the NHL go crazy when their team gets robbed or the refs miss a blatant call.  Well not the Bulldogs, instead they came right back and scored another and briefly looked at the refs for their approval. Upon Mancuso’s goal being approved, the Bulldogs came again and scored, this time by rookie Ryan Scanlon. Instead of the Bulldogs being up 3-0 they we up 2-0.

The Rhinos in shock, quickly rebounded and crashed the net several times and got their first goal of the night past Alex Martinez. It would not stop there as both teams would continue to score (Bulldogs Joe Koehler and John Farias) and end the frame tied up at 4-4.

In the second period, the Rhinos and Bulldogs took turns in the offensive zones and looked like a bunch of heavy weights in a slug fest. The Bulldogs would again get goals from Koehler and Scanlon While the Rhinos also netted 2 and again ending the frame tied up 6-6.

Tired and out of shape and craving a Salami with cheese sandwich, the Bulldogs needed to only win one period and I suppose that was too much to ask. Playing a bit to conservative, the Defense turned the puck over in the Bulldogs zone and the Rhinos would score in what would be the game winner.

The Bulldogs dug themselves again late in the game with penalties, turnovers and allowing the opposition to score goal after goal with some bad play in the Bulldogs zone and by allowing, some 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 breaks. Two periods and the Bulldogs blew there load, as they would once again fall in the third.

After the game the Bulldogs had a closed door meeting of the minds to discuss several options and the future with HNA.

The Good:

  • Offense- Plenty of goals here as 6 is plenty of goals to win.

  • John Farias-  It was good having John back in the lineup after missing some games due to a knee injury.

  • Attitude- The Bulldogs remain hopeful that practice will make for perfection.

  • New Dude- The Bulldogs welcome Jeff Krich as a new member of the front office. Jeff is a professional photographer and look for his work on the Bulldogs website in the weeks to come.

The Bad:

  • The Guys in Stripes- Next time stay home if you don’t want to be there

 The Ugly:

  • The CID Staff member- This kid who continuously echoed the words “Smells like Nasty Old Men in here” as he was cleaning the locker room. Hey Buddy, everyone showered, you probably smelled the Baklava that was left on your scruffy looking beard.  PS- Hope you like the Holiday surprise I left you in the toilet?
