 GAME RECAP

BULLDOGS BARRACUDAS Date/Time Rink
4 2 04/24/2007 IIC, Romeoville, IL

April 19th, 2007- The second round of the playoffs should have been an exciting match-up between the two teams. Unfortunately, the ‘Bulldogs’ received bad news from one of the team’s offensive stars, Mike Montague. The team trainer but Montague on bed rest after tests revealed that he had a bad case of the clap (Chlamydia). Despite their fallen teammate’s bout with the uncomfortable STD, the club prevailed by rallying past the ‘Barracudas’ for a 4-2 victory.

The ‘Barracudas’ came out as the more aggressive team in the first period, by controlling the puck and attacking the net. They jumped to an early 1-0 lead, as the ‘Dogs’ looked like a team struggling to keep up. They did, however, catch a break at the tail end of the period. Finishing his two minute penalty for interference, Joey V. jumped out of the box, and received a long pass, well ahead of the surprised  ‘Barracudas’ defense. With John Reeg trailing, Joey passed him the puck, with Reeg slipping it low past the goalie to tie the game at one apiece.

The ‘Dogs’ couldn’t capitalize on their momentum in the second period. Fourteen minutes worth of penalties depleted their depth, forcing many of the players to double-shift, in turn wearing them out. They were able to limit the ‘Barracudas’ to one measly goal, despite being on the penalty kill six times.

Trailing 2-1, at the start of the third period, the ‘Bulldog’ offense suddenly woke up. They scored three goals (one each by Reeg, Joey V. & Joe Koehler) in a two minute span to take the 4-2 advantage. It was a lead they would never relinquish, despite an over-aggressive ‘Barracudas’ squad that tried every trick in the book to steal the victory.

Great game” said Alex Martinez. “When push came to shove, we stepped it up big in the final period and played solid defense throughout. We took advantage of their mistakes, and broke up most of their offensive attacks.  We now move on to the Championship Game playing the winner of the ‘Fire’-‘Rangers’ semi final game sometime next week.”

The ‘Dogs’ are one victory away from capturing the C-2 title. Anything less than winning the Cup would be considered a failure.

Notes- None

The Good:

  • Defense: Solid defense, not only by the defensemen, but by the forwards as well who cut-off the passing lanes and
  • Goaltending: Despite a twenty three minute scoring drought, goalie Alex Martinez allowed only two goals to keep the ‘Dogs’ chances alive.

The Bad:

  • Penalties: The ‘Bulldogs’ racked up twenty six penalty minutes that hurt the team. Short-handed to begin the game, several players logged far too much box time, which left their teammates fatigued and ineffective for the majority of the second period.

 The Ugly:

  • Joe Byers of the ‘Barracudas’: What can we say, that boy is just butt ugly.
