Career Notes:
CAN/AM Challenge Cup Championship Team (2008)
Congratulations to Ted Markos who completed
his graduate school studies this past semester which
included an internship with the Illinois State
Police.
Great defensemen are hard to find. So when Ted
Markos called in August of 2006, Coach Corley was
all smiles. Ted had a great record of playing solid
defense in high school and with the Chicago Flames
of the CSDHL at his home rink, Center Ice DuPage.
After taking time off from hockey, Ted was ready for
a return as a college senior. "Ted did not let
himself go with his time off from hockey, in fact he
may have been the strongest athlete on the roster
last year", said Coach Corley.
The IceBirds were in need of help on the blue line
so Ted fit in great with a team poised to make a big
splash in the ACHA last year. Ted ended up playing
most of the season partnered with follow senior Bill
Bush. The two had grow up in the same area and had
been teammates in the past.
Ted was a big, physical, dominate defensemen who
took control of his defensive zone and rarely gave
up a scoring chance to an opponent. "We really
relied on Ted last year. He was a stopper who was
consistent." Ted was a big part of the reason why
the IceBirds (ISU's only team at the time) went
31-2-4 in his first year with the team.
While Ted is a big tough guy, he was one of the
nicest, most mature players you could find off the
ice. "He reminded me of former Chicago Bears
linebacker Mike Singletary. He played like he was
going to kill someone, yet off the ice he was the
nicest guy you could find in the arena", related
Coach Corley.
In Ted's first year with ISU hockey, Ted played in
27 games scoring 1 goal, 12 assists and 93 penalty
minutes. This season Ted's internship interferred
with his participation, so he played just 5 of the
team's 21 games with 23 penalty minutes.
While Ted was as tough as they come, he was his
mother's "teddy bear". After a fight at Johnny's
Ice House vs. University of Illinois - Chicago last
year, Ted came off the ice saying, "My mom is going
to kill me!" No one enjoyed watching Ted play more
than his mother.
The Illinois State Hockey family will miss Ted. We
look forward to seeing him at the upcoming Alumni
Game this spring. Now he will be playing for the
old veterans.
Ted, ISU Hockey thanks you for your huge
contributions to the success and growth of this
program!
